Name |
Isle of Wight Amber (Rare)
ref |
2058 |
This genuine Amber from the clays of Brighstone Bay is excessively rare, with reports from institutions documenting around 40 specimens only recorded from the Isle of Wight. It too, is the oldest amber in the world, approximately 110 million years old. The colour when held up to the light is a deep rich honey colour. This amber is reported to come from the conifer (Brachyphllum)(Araucariaceae). The amber piece was found in 1971 after rough seas battered the cliffs. It has resided ever since in the late GORDON WALKDEN collection. An important piece for the collector. Amber is fossilised tree resin which exudes after the tree has been damaged. From this classic location which is sadly no more comes a beautifully worked double Serpulid specimen. These are basically "worm tubes". This particular specimen is more unusual as there are two tubes preserved on this small block of chalk. A wonderful and visually attractive specimen for the discerning collector. |
