description
This is the only virtually complete Brittlestar from the Obtusum Zone of Scunthorpe according to a world leading expert from a major British museum. There is an offical letter to accompany this totally unique Brittlestar from the museum. The Brittlestar was uncovered in a clast which are nodular shaped concretions which have been derived from other sediments. Whilst preparing an Asteroceras which unfortunately was only fragments, this amazing Brittlestar was uncovered and fully prepared by Andy Cowap. This is the cornerstone of any serious collection of fossil Brittlestars and since all the quarries have long since been filled in, means this magnificent specimen can never be repeated. Brittlestars (Class:Ophiuroidea) are named for their five long thin articulated and extremely flexible arms which fragment readily. This is why Brittlestars very rarely fossilise in turbulent conditions such as the preservation suggests at Scunthorpe. Not only is the Brittlestar nearly complete but the detail is fantastic. This is by far the rarest item Fossils Direct has offered on the open market. Approximately 200 million years old.
