description
This dramatic large jaw section has been acid prepared both sides and has about 46 teeth. The overall detail is magnificent. The grooves that run along both top and bottom jaw are where the blood vessels were housed. Temnodontosaurus was the largest Ichthyosaur that lived in Jurassic Seas and its diet included other Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs and the more larger of the fish including Sharks and Dapediums, stomach contents and large Coprolites are good evidence of diet. This particular jaw belonged to a juvenile as the snout is slightly curved upwards, a feature of sub adults. Even though this belonged to a juvenile the average length of the teeth is 60mm. Fully grown adults reached lengths of 45 feet, with a few skulls discovered which are around 6 feet in length. Mary Anning discovered half a dozen of these massive creatures according to old literature in the 19th century, from the exact stretch of cliffs this stunning specimen came. Very few specimens of this calibre of vertebrate jaw material ever come up for sale on the open market. The fossil was discovered in the early 1990s and has remained in the same collection ever since. Approximately 200 million years old. A stunning and totally unique partial jaw section from one the largest prehistoric sea creatures to have ever lived. An excessively rare piece. A chrome display stand accompanies this wonderful jaw section.
