description
Asteracanthus is an extinct genus of Elasmobranchii (sharks belonging to the family Hybodontiadae). This ancient shark had cru7shing teeth and fin spines holding up their dorsal fins. This stunning fin spine lies on a piece of hard Durlston limestone and has been fully prepared. It was first discovered in 1954 and donated to Manchester Museum, it remained there for almost thirty ye4rs until it was exchanged with the late Professor GORDON WALKDEN and there it resided in his private collection. Complete fin spines are exceedingly rare from this locality and this example would certainly fit into any world class collection of rare UK fossil sharks. The detail and colouration on the spine is absolutely magnificent, a real one off piece with fantastic provenance. Approximately 145 million years old.
