This is one of the rarest fossils we have ever offered for sale on Fossils Direct. It was discovered by the late professor GORDON WALKDEN in 1966 weathering out after the collapse of Odin Fissure. The specimen has been repaired in two places and a small amount of sympathetic restoration on the repair, this does not detract from this superb nautilus specimen which is approximately 345 years old. It is by far one of the rarest Castleton fossils we have come across and we only know of 3 others, all of which are in English Museum collections. The visean era within the Castleton area had the straight orthoceras nautiloid and the regular coiled nautiloid such as this one, swimming and hunting side by side, this is an incredibly rare occurance within the fossil record. This wonderful and ecxtremely rare fossil would be the cornerstone of any Castleton or Nautiloid collection. Fossils Direct is a premium collectors website. |
