description |
|
This extremely rare type of nautilus has been preserved in solid calcite and has a perfect centre both sides. Only very rarely do fossil nautilus from this locality come on the open market for sale. Nautilus from the Opalinum zone are virtually unheard of from this iconic oolithic locality, especially very well preserved ones such as this wonderful example. There are two small patches of repair but sympathetically done. We have checked with three major museums in England and they only have two specimens from this location, and both are unprepared. There are also serpulid worm casts preserved on the outer whorl. Approximately 176 million years old. An exceptionally rare nautilus for the discerning and serious collector. Fossils Direct is a premium collectors website. |
