  This very rare fossil is believed to be, by lots of scientists to be the jaw apparatus of ammonites. This exceptionally well preserved example is totally complete and belongs to the ammonite Arnioceras semicostatoides. These aptychi (Jaws) are very rarely seen preserved within the ammonites living chamber because after the ammonite's death, the jaw apparatus nearly always becomes dis-attached due to organic breakdown of muscle tissues. A beautiful and very interesting fossil which is approximately 200 million years old.
